Get That Job!! Great Tips for a Great Interview! by Tammy ElrodEverybody out there is worried they might be the next pink slip recipient. Or, they already are the proud owner of their own pink slip. Either way, competition for jobs right now is fierce! Anything you can do to make yourself stand out in the crowd is essential. This article will provide you with tips essential to nailing that next interview. First of all, do your research. Don't walk into a job interview with absolutely no knowledge of the company you are hoping to get a job with. What do they sell, what do they make, how do they operate, how long have they been in business, these are the types of things you will want to look into. Not only will they be impressed by your interest in the company, but it will also help you prepare some questions of your own, which also shows initiative. Dress to impress!! No, I don't mean flashy!! Nice conservative dress is the best bet. For guys go with a nice pair of slacks, button down shirt, and tie (do NOT forget the tie). For you ladies a nice skirt or pair of slacks and blouse will do the trick. Good hygiene is important! Showing that you took some time to look good for the company shows that you care about the way you present yourself and the company. Do not overdo the cologne or perfume. You certainly don't want them to be wanting to get you out of the room because of your overwhelming perfume choice! Keep the conversation positive. Do NOT make negative remarks about past jobs, coworkers, or yourself. Be on time!! Major important point there!! If you are late for an interview you will be late for the job, bad first impression! Practice the interview using questions for yourself and your own questions for the interviewers. This will help you be more comfortable when you arrive and feeling more prepared. This will show as confidence. Watch your body language. This is very important also, and most people don't realize what type of impression they make just with body language. Shake hands with a firm handshake and keep eye contact. This not only shows confidence, but also emits honesty. Do not slouch as people may take this as a sign of laziness. Use good language skills. Speak politely, clearly and use proper English, not slang. Again, have questions prepared to ask the interviewer. This is where your research comes in handy. Take notes during the interview, this will help you with questions later. And last, but certainly not least, follow up with a thank you note. Make sure you thank the employer for their time and for the chance to interview with them. This is not only the polite thing to do, but also reaffirms your interest in working for the company. To sum it up, be prepared!! Not only does this show to the interviewer, but it also helps you feel more confident and comfortable, which will definitely make a better first impression!!
